Lethbridge – Athletes from the Alberta Sport Development Centre Southwest Athlete Enhancement Program (AEP) had a strong showing at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer and helped Alberta place third in the medal standings with 36 gold, 33 silver and 31 bronze.
AEP alumni Kaleb Muller, the 2018 AEP Alumni Athlete of the Year, won gold in the 5000m and Team Pursuit Long Track Speed Skating Events. Muller also skated to a silver in the 1500m and fifth in the 500m events. The Lethbridge Speed Skating member trains out of the Olympic Oval in Calgary.
Multiple AEP Team athletes from the Lethbridge Kyodokan Judo Club medaled for Alberta. Congratulations Evelyn Beaton (gold – 44kg), Kiera Westlake (gold – 57kg), Joel Demaere (gold – 60kg), Nathan Demaere (silver – 66kg) and Taylor Althouse (bronze – 81kg). The Lethbridge Kyodokan Judo Club is a Judo Canada Regional Training Center.
Hayleigh Craig, a forward currently playing for the Lloydminster PWM Steelers, was competing for Team Alberta in female hockey. The Alberta female hockey team captured gold with an overtime win over Quebec.
Lethbridge Boxing Club member Josh Peck did not get past the preliminary round in Red Deer. Peck did captured silver at the 2018 Canadian National Finals and gold at the 2018 Alberta Provincials.
AEP Selects athlete Mikka Eaves competed in her first long track speed skating at the Canadian Age Class Long Track Championships in Winnipeg last month. Eaves won silver with the Alberta Jr. Girls Team Pursuit event and is currently ranked 2nd in Qualifying Ranking for 2019 Canada West Short Track Championships.
